1. "Biotechnology has occupied a prime position in the historical development of science. Divided in traditional and modern biotechnology, this crucial science has got applications ranging from liquor production to fields like medicines, agriculture, environmental protection to name a few. Primarily dealing with living systems, Biotechnology incorporates any techniques which uses living organisms, enzymes, and proteins etc, which are occurring naturally or derived. The traditional techniques are getting a boost through use of biotechnological methods. Genetically modified organisms, hybrids etc are slowly capturing agricultural scenario, though with some negative aspects in the environmental sector. Assam with a rice heritage of diverse biological resources like rice, tea, citrus, banana, cane, bamboo, orchid, medicinal and aromatic plants, silk, aquatic flora, microbial resources etc., can boast of as one of the biodiversity hotspot of the world. Yet there are few educational and research institutions presently carrying out R&D in Biotechnology here. Most of the findings are confined to the laboratory only. So, to bring out the latest research findings and other related activities, setting up of a Biotechnology Cell is utmost necessary. The Government of Assam has given the consent to set up a Biotechnology Cell at ASTEC. "
2. A biotech lab with palnt tissue culture has been set up. Process for tissue culture of threatened plants is in progress.
