Development and Management of Deepor Beel

1. De-silting/regeneration of the wetland: The Council has completed regeneration of about one kilometer long area with about 50 meter width in the outside of the core area of Deepor Beel. An embankment in the northern side of the regenerated area is being constructed and a major portion is now completed. Fencing has been done along the newly regenerated area (1700 meter) near Assam Engineering College. The regenerated area is now ready for connecting to the Core area. Moreover the Council is planning to develop this area a zone for eco-tourism activities.
2. Development of Alternate Fishing Ground: To minimize public intervention in the Core Area of the wetland the Council is promoting development of alternate fishing grounds in the fringe area of the wetland. This will help the fishing community to support their livelihood and minimize their dependency on the Core Area. One fishing zone has been developed in the southern fringe area of the wetland during the year and the work for another has been started in the northwestern fringe area.
3. Gully Control: To control the incoming silt from the Rani-Garbhanga hills, gully control measures have been initiated. Six such Gullies have been constructed. More such gullies are being constructed foe effective control of the silt.
4. Watch Tower: A beautiful watchtower with indigenous bamboo technology has been constructed in the bank of the regenerated stretch of the wetland towards northeastern part of the wetland. The watchtower is now attracting nature lover to watch the beauty of the wetland and birds watching.
5. Water analysis: This is an ongoing activity and water sample has been tested regularly in 10 points near inlets and outlets of the wetland
6. Weed Control: For maintenance of the water body as a suitable habitat for the aquatic species control of the weeds is a necessity. The weed (particularly water hyacinth) control is carried out in about 2000 square meter area during the year.
7. Tree Plantation: Tree plantation is being carried out with the help of the local community. About 3-hectare area has been brought under plantation programme and plantations already done in the previous years are being maintained.
8. Drinking water facilities to the villagers: Local communities are integral part of the wetland system and they require proper socio-economic and health support. Drinking water is a serious problem around the wetland. The Council has provided drinking water facilities at three points for the villagers during the year.
