Organic Cultivation and Semi-processing of High Valued Medicinal Plants Involving Rural Women in Assam

1. This is a three-year project supported by Science & Society Division, Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of india implemented during 2000-2003.
2. The project was started with a general meeting at the project area on 19-09-2001 for awareness generation among the women and their active participation.
3. Live materials of allocated species were collected and introduced to the medicinal plant garden for large-scale cultivation as well as for conservation.
4. Established a Demonstration Medicinal Garden and more than 4 acres of land is under cultivation of allocated medicinal plants including some of the rare and endangered species.
5. Constructed a Polyhouse cum Nursery (area covered: 400 sq.m., Length 20m, Breadth 20m, Height 2.5m) with 75% Agro-shadenet, concrete posts, bamboos and goat proof fence.
6. Weighing machine and equipment had been procured and a Poly-drying Chamber had been constructed.
7. Water supply facility to the Nursery and the garden had been completed.
8. Organised four Training Programmes and 109 Women Beneficiaries were trained including 10 Women Core Trainees.
9. 100 seedlings of medicinal plant species were supplied to each beneficiary for their own cultivation.
10. Collected some information of indigenous knowledge on the use of medicinal plants in rural area of Assam.
11. A Brochure on ‘Cultivation of Medicinal Plants for Economic Development’ had been published under this project(copy enclosed).
