Map Learning Workshop

1. Two of the most important geo-sciences, Geography and Geology are holding an important area of science education. Knowledge related to making and reading of maps is an integral part of this science through which we can identify resources and can plan and formulate development works for the benefit of the mankind and other lives in a sustainable way. Topographic maps are graphic representations of natural and man-made features of parts of the earth’s surface plotted to scale. These maps in a nutshell provide a complete inventory of the terrain including the diverse use and development of the land. In addition, they are the source for specialized maps as well as generalized maps in smaller scales. As, this interesting practice of making and reading maps is not taught in the school level, an effort is being made to learn this science through field based map learning activities. As a part of the scheme, teachers and senior students will be imparted training through experts in this field with the aid of toposheets, softwares, mapping instruments and GPS, etc. The basic objective of this project in short is to propagate the idea of Map-learning and generate the skill so that it can be used in development planning through hands on activities. The project is supported and catalysed by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Assam with technical collaboration of SSEAEP, Nagaon, an active environmental NGO of Assam. The module has been prepared by SSEAEP for National Council for Science & Technology Communication, Department of Science & Technology , Govt. of India
2. One module on Map Learning published in Assamese and English has been developed.
3. "Twelve numbers of Map-Learning Workshops organised in the state of Assam. "
4. 700 teachers were trained
