With the support of the North Eastern Council (NEC), the S&T Division of the Council had set up a pilot plant for degumming of ramie fibre (technology developed by Shri D. Hazarika under the guidance of the division) at Bihpuria, Lakhimpur, Assam. The sample of ramie fibre was tested by National Institute of Research on Jute and Allied Fibre Technology (ICAR), Kolkata and found the degummed fibre fine and strong as indicated in the test report. The sample of ramie fibre degummed by this method have also been tested by numbers of textile industries like Indian Jute Industries' Research Association, Meridian Consultancy, Kumarappa Handmade Paper Institute etc. and found to be perfectly suitable for use in textile industries. Final report and technical knowhow of degumming technology of the project has been submitted to NEC, Shillong. Further works to be done on popularization of ramie cultivation and its commercial utilization.
