Spatio-Temporal Mapping of Methane Emission from Rice Fields

Background

The project Spatio-temporal mapping of methane emission from rice fields is sponsored by Department of Space, Govt. of India and is implemented in 12 major rice growing states of the country including Assam. Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad is coordinating the project at national level. ARSAC has been involved as the State Nodal Agency for methane sampling from rice fields since 2004.

Objectives

  • Intensive field measurement and analysis of methane emissions from different agro-ecological regions of country.
  • Integration of remote sensing and ancillary information in GIS environment to stratify the area and design an optimum sampling plan for field measurements.
  • Generation of Spatio-temporal emission pattern of methane from rice ecosystem.
  • To simulate the methane emission pattern for predicting emission based on soil, cultivars and environmental characteristics.

Activity

  • Requisite soil and methane sample collected from rice fields as per norms has been sent to CRRI, Cuttack for analysis.
