Integrated Studies of 20 Major Wetlands of Assam For Fisheries Development

Background

The project Integrated Studies of 20 Major Wetlands of Assam, is sponsored by the Notrth Eastern Council, Govt. of India, Shillong. The project involves mapping of the waterspread area of each wetland through visual interpretation and Digital Image Processing of satellite images. Integration of map data and field data such as soil and water quality parameters, land use landcover, land tenure, physiography etc. will be done through application of Geographic Information System.

Objectives

  • To delineate the waterspread area and its seasonal variation in each wetland using IRS LISS III satellite data on 1:50,000 scale.
  • To identify and delineate aquatic and other vegetation in and around the wetlands and assign qualitative turbidity levels to wetlands
  • To analyse the physical and chemical parameters of soil and water in each of the 20 wetlands
  • To integrate the maps and data through GIS
  • To generate a computerised database for the 20 major wetlands of Assam.

Activity

  • Preparation of project report is in progress.
