Forest Cover Dynamics Study and Afforestation Site Identification through Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

Background

This is an in-house project sponsored by A.S.T.E. Council. The project involves visual interpretation of satellite images for classification and estimation of forest cover within the boundary of greater Guwahati through visual interpretation and digital image processing methods. The suitable sites for afforestation are also to be identified through application of Geographic Information System. The out come of the project will be presented in the form of maps (1:25,000 scale) and reports.

Objectives

  • To identify and delineate the forest cover within the greater Guwahati using satellite data of winter season (IRS LISS III and PAN merged for the year 2002) on 1:25,000 scale.
  • To classify the forest areas.
  • To identify suitable sites for afforestation from the maps already prepared supported with field data
  • To generate a computerised database for the notified forest areas.

Activity

  • The project work is under progress and is expected to be useful while planning for developmental activities within the forest areas of the Guwahati city.
