Integrated Studies of Major Wetlands of Goalpara District of Assam using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

Background

The project is sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India. The project involves visual interpretation of satellite images, computerised classification of wetlands through digital image processing, application of Geographic Information System for overlaying and comparison of different data layers on wetlands of the district on 1:50,000 scale. Both digital as well as paper prints of satellite data of two different periods namely pre and post monsoon are used for the study. The project is under progress.

Objectives

  • To identify and delineate major wetlands in Goalpara district using satellite data pre and post monsoon seasons (IRS LISS II for the year 1996) on 1:50,000 scale.
  • To identify and delineate aquatic and other vegetation in and around wetlands and assign qualitative turbidity levels to wetlands.
  • To generate a computerised database for the wetlands of Goalpara district of Assam.

Activity

  • The project report is under preparation and is expected to be widely used by the planners for making appropriate strategies for sustainable utilization of the wetlands of the district.
